Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation (Benecia)

During the "Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation" at the Benicia Library located at 150 East L Street, there is a lecture on Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Sunday, October 1st at 2pm. Dr. Leon Litwack of UC Berkeley will discuss Abraham Lincoln and slavery. Dr. Litwack is scholar of the Civil War and Reconstruction, social, labor, Black history and race relations.

Danville D’Elegance (Danville)

The 2nd annual Danville D’Elegance will be held in downtown Danville on Sunday, October 1st. Through the support of sports car organizations they will display, for public showing, some of the finest exotic sports cars in the world. Expect to see over 100 Ferraris and other exotic cars on display along Hartz Avenue. To accent the car review we will have some of the top Northern California winery’s tasting their wines, and sample outstanding food from several local restaurants. For easy viewing of the cars, the Town of Danville will close Hartz Avenue between Prospect and Church. The event will be held between 12pm and 5pm.

Concours d'Elegance (Danville)

Enjoy the Danville D'Elegance Fine and Specialty Auto Show with more than 60 Ferraris, exotic automobiles, live music, auctions, drawings and celebrities Sunday, October 1st from noon to 5 p.m. at Hartz Avenue between Prospect Avenue and Church Street.

Clayton Oktoberfest (Clayton)

The Clayton Business and Community Association present the third annual Clayton Oktoberfest on September 30 and October 1st from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday in downtown Clayton. There is a carnival that opens Friday from 5 to 10pm and continues through the weekend; parade on Main Street at 1pm on Saturday; the mayor taps the keg in the biergarten at 1:30 p.m. Music by the Internationals non-stop from 1:30 on Sat. and 1:00 on Sunday. German dancers performing twice on Saturday in the biergarten. Marcus, a street performer, performing shows in the plaza on both Sat. & Sun. Many artisans selling unique handcrafted items. Featuring imported Spaten German beer and fine California wines. Great food in the German tradition. Fun for the entire family.

8th Annual Art in the Park Artists (Alamo)

The Alamo Danville Artists' Society (ADAS) recently announced its 8th Annual Art in the Park on Front Street in Danville set for September 30 & October 1. This fine arts festival features paintings in all media, fine jewelry, photography, pottery and other work by some of the Bay Area's finest artists. This is a very popular and well attended event happening right at the start of the Christmas Holiday shopping season. Interested artists, especially painters and 3-dimensional artists are encouraged to apply now as there are still a few openings in these categories. (The Jewelry & Photography categories are closed.) Artists wishing to apply for the event can request a prospectus by sending a Stamped, Self-Addressed Envelope (SASE) to: Norma Webb, 67 Hazelnut Ct., San Ramon, CA 94583, or by e-mail. Art in the Park on Front Street directly benefits Art in the Schools programs in the San Ramon School District.

"Art in the Park" (Danville)

Fine art, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, and photography from many local artists will be featured September 30th and October 1st at the 8th annual Art in the Park. The event takes place at the Town Green next to the community center at 420 Front Street in Danville. The event will run both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be musical entertainment and a judged art show inside the community center.

Six Flags Fright Fest (Vallejo)

Six Flags Fright Fest runs Fridays through Sundays from September 29th through October 29th from 10am to 10pm each day at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo. Weekends during the month of October bring Halloween surprises from frightful to mild for park guests. Haunted houses, costume contests are just a few of the offerings. Separate wristband purchase required. Admission is $51.99 with $15 for parking.

"As You Like It" (Orinda)

William Shakespeare’s "As You Like It" is onstage at the Bruns Theatre on Gateway Blvd. in Orinda weekends through October 15th. Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone and composer Gina Leishman, whose collaboration on 2001’s Twelfth Night, was acclaimed by the SF Chronicle as "a triumph", join forces with Cal Shakes’ Associate Artists to create a unique and surprisingly musical version of Shakespeare’s gender-bending romantic comedy.

Robert Fulghum’s "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" is onstage at the Del Valle Theater in Walnut Creek weekends through October 1st with Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm. Kindergarten takes a funny, insightful and heartwarming look at what is profound in everyday life. Spook-A-Palooza Film Festival (Benecia)

There’s a Spook-A-Palooza Film Festival at the Veteran's Hall Complex, 1150 First Street - Benicia Friday, October 6th through Sunday, October 8th with showtimes at 7pm Friday and Saturday nights and 2pm matinees on Sunday. Healthy, Wealthy and Wise: Our Journey from 50 to 100

The Diablo Valley Foundation for the Aging presents an educational conference titled "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise: Our Journey from 50 to 100" Friday, October 6th from 8:30am to 2pm at the Shadelands Art Center, 111 Wiget Lane in Walnut Creek. Cost is $30 per person and includes a box lunch. Walnut Creek Mayor Kathy Hicks, and supervisors Gayle Uilkema, Federal Glover and John Gioia are among the members of the event’s honorary committee. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will also send a representative. Speakers will include Peter McGugan, motivational speaker, broadcaster, therapist and author of "When Something Changes Everything," and Dr. William Fry Jr., psychiatrist and professor emeritus from the Stanford University School of Medicine. Fry is also a pioneer in humor research and humor therapy. The event will help people take more control over their future, and will offer resources, information and a few laughs.

Pleasant Hill Art Jazz & Wine Festival (Pleasant Hill)
